For Westerners visiting China throughout the ages, Shanghai has always been seen as a gateway to the East, the main sea port to the Yangtse River. Today Shanghai is a financial center for the most rapidly growing economy of the 21st century. The opportunities for American expats are boundless, and the discovery of a truly foreign culture is a wonder to experience. Here is a guide to some of the essential experiences for a newly arriving visitor or an veteran měiguórén.
The magnetic-levitation train ride – This bullet train leaves from the international airport and arrives in Shanghai. The train can go to speeds above 260 miles an hour, and the trip takes about eight minutes (Single-ride tickets: 50 yuan).
Fuxing Park – Located in the heart of the colonial-era French Concession, you’ll encounter all types of Shanghai denizens, from the colorful to the bizarre and everything in between. Nearby is the former residence of Sun Yat-sen. The house is an amazing example of the architecture and the lifestyle of the era.
The Shanghai Museum – Founded in 1952 and located on People’s Square the museum has a collection of over 120,000 pieces, including bronze, jades, ceramics, sculptures, ancient coins, calligraphy, paintings, furniture, seals, and other assorted art. The Shanghai Museum houses several items of national importance, including one of three extant specimens of a “transparent” bronze mirror from the Han Dynasty.
Shanghai Cuisine – The food is some of the best you’ll find anywhere in China, is traditionally comprised of lots of seafood, especially crab, pork or chicken, fresh vegetables, and alcohol. A suggestion: The soup dumpling, or xiaolong bao, for example, is comprised of a light dumpling skin which is wrapped around a juicy pork filling with broth.
